Russel Field Shelter to Mt Collins Shelter (6/12/14)

Turkey I saw on the trail today.

Benchmark on the trail.

Well, today turned out to be quite the crappy day of hiking. Twenty two and seven tenth miles was a lot more than I should have done, and now I have to figure out how to meet Jeff to get my resupply.

I saw a turkey on the trail today, and that was probably the best part of my hike. Other than that, today's hike just sucked. My feet and legs hurt and I got soaked to the bone in a nasty rainstorm. I am cooped up in my sleeping bag now trying to warm up. I didn't get here until late, much later than I wanted. So I'll say I don't really like The Great Smoky Mountains. There haven't been that many good views, it has rained the preponderance of the time I've hiked, and the trail has giant rock and timber steps that require you to exert more effort than you ever thought you'd have to. Suffice it to say, I'm unimpressed with the Smokies.  The one redeeming quality is that it smelled like Christmas--the spruce and fir forest gave it that smell, but it was only as I approached Clingman's Dome.

Okay, this post is a bit bitter, but the rain has me cold to the core, so I have to warm up. Perhaps my spirits will improve tomorrow.
