Smoky mountains is the truth. But I love these evergreen spruces.
Okay, today was a much better day of hiking. I have dry clothes, and I made it pretty far today. The goal is to make it out of the park tomorrow to Standing Bear Farms Hostel. The Great Smoky Mountains redeemed themselves today after the horrific previous day. Jeff dropped me off this morning and I set off on my way. I hoofed it pretty quickly and made it to tri-corner knob shelter.
The views today were actually pretty amazing! The overviews had a view instead of everything being covered in clouds and mist. There were also amazing smells of Christmas as I hiked. Being in the spruce and fir forests makes me long for Christmas. The only smell missing is cinnamon, which my brain has found a way to subconsciously substitute for it.
Having a notepad in my pocket helped me today to record my thoughts as I walked. I will treat you all to a very raw poem I started today. Keep in mind it has not been polished yet and it will still require a lot of work. But, you can see the raw workings of my brain.
-----------------------------------
_Redemption_
You were unkind the first few days
Driving home the point of poor planning
Hard.
Rain.
A cold rain
The day before I started
And two days in
Steady rain
Hard rain
Cold rain
Drenched like a drowned rat
A detour to warmth and dry
Then back with fire
Your temperament better
Bitterness abated
Anger faded as views went by
The craggy ridges and peaks
Reaching for the sky
Punctuated by ever green
Shrouded in clouds
Veiled and unveiled
Like a bride
Great Smoky Mountains
Redeemed
----------------------------------
There it is in raw form. It will eventually be polished, just not tonight. I want to sleep well because I have an 18.4 mile hike tomorrow if I want to reach Standing Bear Farms and get the ice cream that Hope left there for me. That will also put me out of the park. Looking forward to moving along.
